Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

Athens dentist encourages patients to consider the benefits of porcelain crowns

Posted by Dr. Anita Mathew

Porcelain crowns are a wonderful restoration for patients in the Athens, GA area. Dr. Anita Mathew and her staff at TLC Dental Spa work closely with patients to determine if this is an option for a broken or missing tooth.

Porcelain crowns explained

Porcelain crowns are ceramic restorations that are made for a variety of purposes. Also known as “caps,” these restorations cover a natural tooth or are used on top of a dental implant to replace a tooth. Additionally, they may be made to fuse to a false tooth called a pontic to create a dental bridge. These are all viable solutions.

Methods of use

A porcelain crown is incredibly versatile and may be used in the following ways:

  • Tooth coverage – a tooth that has been injured or undergone an extensive procedure such as root canal therapy may benefit from an extra layer of protection. The tooth is filed down and the porcelain crown is fabricated to bond over the top. It covers all of the exposed tooth, to keep the natural structure from further breakage.
  • Tooth replacement – an implant may be placed to and restored with a crown over the top to replace a single missing tooth. Fusing a crown to a pontic can create a bridge for tooth replacement, as well.
