Fillings in Athens

Dental Fillings - Athens & Oconee

Cavities are one of the dental problems we see most frequently. While our immediate goal may be to end the discomfort of a cavity, which can range from sensitivity to intense pain, we also want to perform repair in a way that suits the individual patient for several years to come.

Most of us have at least one filling. For a long time, fillings could be made from gold or metal alloy material called amalgam. Each of these materials has been common since before the 20th Century. While they remain a solid option for the repair of a damaged tooth, each lacks something that most consumers today want: a natural appearance.

We spend a good deal of our time in front of a camera these days, snapping images of ourselves and our loved ones as we enjoy various activities and events. Due to the nature of the "selfie" society in which we live, many patients who visit Dr. Mathew at TLC Dental Spa ask about tooth-colored fillings.

Tooth colored fillings are typically comprised of composite resin. This substance is as hard as bone and is ideal for the restoration of teeth due to its similarity in appearance to enamel. In a process that takes only a few minutes, Dr. Mathew can restore a tooth to its most natural appearance, disguising the fact that a cavity ever existed.

The natural appearance of composite fillings is just one of several advantages to this restorative process. While appearance is what patients may initially be most interested in, significant functional benefits come from this method of repair.

Due to the fact composite is not metal this material is ideal for patients with metal allergies as well as those who wish to remain metal-free in their dental work. Metal, such as amalgam fillings, can be rather hard on teeth. This is because metal expands and contracts in response to heating. While enamel does this as well, it does so at a different rate. The variance can lead to two issues. First, the tooth that is placed under stress day after day may eventually develop tiny fractures. As the filling loosens within the tooth, it is also possible for bacteria to enter areas where the seal between filling and tooth is weak.

We are fortunate to have multiple options for tooth repair. The key is to see your dentist early so that conservative care remains sufficient to restore optimal structure. Contact TLC Dental Spa today.

Dental sealants, also known as fissure sealants, are thin, protective coatings that cover the chewing surfaces of teeth. They are most often used on the back teeth or molars. Here, they 'fill' the deep grooves on the surface.
