Your kid’s dentist in Athens offers support for home hygiene

Brushing and flossing are not only necessary for those with a full set of teeth. Oral hygiene is crucial for every member of your family, even those with baby teeth that are still making their way into the mouth. In addition to finding a good kid’s dentist in Athens for routine care, you want support when you need it. Managing the oral care habits of children can be tricky. With tender loving care, we offer some tips to assist busy parents in this task.

Get a head start. Oral care can begin well before your baby has teeth. When all you see are gums, teeth are forming underneath. At this time, the mouth needs to be cleaned of the natural bacteria that live there. This can be done with a soft, moist cloth after each feeding. Using a soft infant toothbrush, the first teeth that erupt can be cleaned on a daily basis. The early habit of brushing, even though performed by you, will lay a strong foundation for lifelong oral care habits.

Consistency is key. As with any new habit, a child must receive consistent instruction and assistance in order to achieve success. Brushing should become a twice-a-day habit at a very young age. During the first several years of your child's life, you will be doing the brushing and flossing. Also, remember to schedule check-ups as recommended by your dentist. Consistency will make it easier for your child to develop a good attitude toward dental care.

Keep it fun. Learning is a chore if it is not stimulating for a child. Brushing can be made into a pleasant habit with decorated toothbrushes or a child's choice of toothpaste. Treats like stickers may also be offered as a reward for good oral care habits.

As your child begins to perform his or her own oral care, which should not happen until they are at least school-aged, you will need to monitor their success. Many children lack the dexterity and the patience to get into all the nooks and crannies that exist in the mouth. In addition to supervision, it is likely that you will need to do some follow-up work with your child.
